Homemade deodorant

Before you read this, go and get your deodorant, then come back.

Got it? OK, now look at the ingredients on the label and see if it contains any of these:

Harmful ingredients commonly found in deodorant

Phthalates – used as a solvent in cosmetics and personal care products. According to animal studies, phthalates can damage the liver, kidneys, lungs, and reproductive system. For pregnant moms, exposure to phthalates is sufficient to significantly increase the risk of abnormal development in male fetuses and baby boys.

Aluminum – Acts as a plug to block the sweat duct and keep you from sweating. Absorbs into the skin & Causes estrogen-like effects. Estrogen has been shown to contribute to the growths of breast cancer cells.

Parabens – (methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, or benzylparaben) mimics the activity of estrogen in the body’s cells and shown to be stored in breast tissue.

Propylene glycol – skin irritant and potential toxicity that is linked to cancer. Propylene glycol material safety data sheet (MSDS) clearly states that it may be toxic to the central nervous system and that prolonged exposure can produce organ damage.

Triclosan – An artificial antimicrobial chemical used to kill bacteria on the skin and other surfaces. Triclosan is a skin irritant and may cause contact dermatitis. This chemical may disrupt thyroid function and other critical hormone systems. The American Medical Association recommends that triclosan and other “antibacterial” products not be used in the home, because they may encourage bacterial resistance to antibiotics that can allow resistant strains to flourish.

If you found any of these ingredients in your deodorant, stop using it right away!

I have been on the search for a natural deodorant for many years. Every time I came home with a new one to try, my husband would shake his head. Most of them just didn’t work!

After scouring the internet for ideas of natural ingredients to use for deodorant, I came up with this one using a blend of pure essential oils. Even my husband uses it because it works!

PS, If you are prone so sweating, try also dusting on a natural talc-free baby powder after you use your natural deodorant.

Here is what you will need… (The oil is 35 drops TOTAL. Please see entire recipe below.)

Ingredients
  1. 1/2 cup coconut oil
  2. 1/4 cup arrowroot powder
  3. 1 tablespoon baking soda
  4. Essential oils (Jana's Blend) - I have found these oils to be most effective
  5. Melaleuca 10 drops
  6. Geranium 10 drops
  7. Frankincense 5 drops
  8. Lavender 5 drops
  9. Bergamot 5 drops
Instructions
  1. Mix all ingredients in a bowl, mashing with a fork to get the clumps out of the coconut oil.
  2. Pour into an empty deodorant tube or a glass jar.
  3. This recipe makes a paste-like consistency (just apply with your fingers). It will fit perfectly in a 4 oz glass jar. (always be sure to use glass when making anything with essential oils)
  4. If you want this deodorant to roll on from a tube, a good option is to keep it in the fridge to keep it firm.
