Winter Skincare Tips

Your ultimate guide to Glowing in the Cold.

Taking care of your skin during the cold season requires a little extra effort to stay hydrated and rejuvenated. I’ve got some great winter skincare tips for you!

Running heaters and fireplaces will dry out your skin leaving it itchy, dull and tired looking. When our skin is dry, wrinkles become more apparent.

Properly nourished and hydrated skin will look fresh, youthful and vibrant.

Here are some tips to keep your skin looking it’s best during the colder months:

In your home or office, run a diffuser or humidifier.

During winter, low humidity levels and indoor heating can strip your skin of its nature moisture, leaving to dryness, irritation and flaking. If your skin is feeling extra “tight”, this is an indication of low humidity.

Increasing the air’s humidity will make your skin happy. Humidifiers can maintain the ideals 30-50% humidity range, promoting hydrated, resilient skin.

I have the Groove humidifier and I love that it holds a large tank of water, it’s easy to clean and It’s linked with Bluetooth that I can control from an app on my phone.

Diffusers are less effective, but still do help add some humidity. What I do love about diffusers is that you can add essential oils for some added benefits, such as supporting the immune system and clearing a stuffy nose. Many companies make diffusers that run for 12 hours so you can keep it going all day long! I recommend running a diffuser/humidifier in your home, office and bedroom at night.

Take an Omega-3 fatty acid supplement and increase your healthy fat consumption.

Our skin loves it when we consume healthy fats. To support brain and overall health and, to keep our skin beautiful, Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) are necessary . EFAs are found in cold-pressed oils, flax and hemp seeds, walnuts, dark leafy greens like spinach and kale, egg yolks (make sure they are pastured eggs, not cage free), and cold-water fish such as salmon, sardines and mackerel. Stay away from farm-raised fish though.

If you don’t eat a lot of fish, take a high-quality Omega-3 supplement.

I recommend the Advanced Plant Omega supplement by Gundry MD – click here.

In addition, another winter skincare tip is to boost your intake of healthy fats like olive oil, avocados, olives, coconut oil and grass-fed butter will greatly benefit your skin.

Furthermore, boosting your healthy fat intake will also add benefits to:

  • Support cell turnover
  • Reduce cellulite
  • Reduce acne and inflammation
  • Balance oil production

Go easy on the hot water.

Hot water can strip your natural skin’s barrier and cause extra dryness and itchy skin. Your skin will do best with lukewarm/cool water when washing your face. I know, a hot steamy shower is heavenly on those chilly days so if you must, remember to thoroughly hydrate your skin with a rich shay butter based moisturizer immediately after your shower or bath. An even better option would be to immediately apply a body oil when your skin is still wet. Once that absorbs and your skin is dry, then apply your rich body lotion.

Finally, use nourishing skin care products with natural ingredients.

A winter skincare tip that I give to my clients is to add a hydrating facial oil to your regimen and include a hydrating treatment mask (1-3 weeks depending on how dry your skin is).

Believe it or not, many skin care companies will use ingredients that do little to nothing for your skin as well as cause skin irritation and dryness. These products are usually cheap, easy to find and mass produced. Stay away from these products and instead, seek out companies that only use natural and safe ingredients.

Here are some companies I love:

  • Annmarie skin care– Their facial oils are by far the best I’ve tried and I love how nourishing their formulations are. They use only pure plant ingredients and extracts that are organic or wild crafted. A bonus is that all their products smell divine.
  • Crunchi – Crunchi has set a new standard for cosmetic safety. Crunchi is a revolutionary line of high-performance, safe, and toxin-free cosmetics that are redefining beauty. I use their foundation every day! Pro tip, apply it with their fabulous foundation brush. Their night cream, eye cream and peptide serum is divine, and perfect for dry, mature skin. You won’t be disappointed!
  • Bioessance – Conveniently found at Sephora, this brand has clean ingredients that are effective. I love their use of vegan squalane. Their Squalane copper peptide plumping serum is amazing!
  • Hyaluronic Acid Jelly Mask – by SeoulCeuticals. This lovely mask Improves hydration and glow, minimizes the appearance of lines and wrinkles, increases elasticity and resilience.

I believe these simple changes to your skin care regimen and healthy eating routine will make a huge difference during these colder months to keep your skin hydrated, nourished and vibrant.

As always, increasing your water intake can help tremendously with skin hydration, health and vibrancy.
